The integration of new communication, interactivity, and display technologies fundamentally transforms spaces and places into networked, responsive environments. Within this context, architecture has become “smart” at scales that range from materials to equipment to façades. A building envelope is currently the site of intense speculation; new material properties in glass, polymers, and fabrics offer new spatial, visual, and thermal properties.
A new initiative entitled “Technologies for Building and Adaptive Architectures” was launched by Merck KGaA, Darmstadt, Germany in cooperation with Harvard University, Graduate School of Design. The first expert conference in this series was held on October 1 and 2, 2015 in Chicago. Over 20 leading architects, designers, urban planners and other practitionersas presenters and discussion participants engaged in an exchange with an expert on new technologies and materials that permit innovative functionalities and new designs for construction and urban planning.
At the conference, Merck KGaA, Darmstadt, Germany presented liquid crystal window technology which enables windows to be switched in just seconds from light to dark and vice versa. The conference also featured an extensive exhibition with display items and the latest application examples of Performance Materials, such as photovoltaic modules and OLED cells.
